At Canopy, we take great pride in the process we use to evaluate every candidate who wishes to become an expert advisor in our community. We’ve curated the very best independent professionals across every discipline we support, and it’s partly because of the great care we take with each step in our vetting process.

Here’s how it works:

1

Discover

Every candidate to join the Canopy Advisory community must be referred to us or chosen for candidacy by a Canopy staff member. Starting the process with candidates who have strong advocates for their work, style and expertise is an important first step in filtering through an initial screening to ensure the candidate represents top-tier talent.

2

Meet

We then meet with every candidate for an in-depth interview, face-to-face if at all possible. In this session, we focus on getting a sense for how the expert thinks, how they solve problems, and how they communicate, and slightly less on their specific skills (which should have become clear through your initial screen).

3

Evaluate

The next step is to ask candidates who have passed through the screen and the in-depth interview to include an assessment that combines cognitive and cultural questions. For vetting expert talent like fractional workers, an assessment that focuses on both elements ensures that we’re selecting not only the best and brightest from a cognitive perspective, but also someone who is likely to connect well with the members of our clients’ organizations.

4

Verify

For those who reach the final stage, we perform thorough conversations with their professional references. These discussions serve a dual purpose: 1) The conversations validate or invalidate our initial takeaways from the evaluation process and 2) help us understand each candidate’s greatest strengths and areas where they may not have as much experience or interest. Finding the right fractional expert often comes down to discovering the person whose skills and passions best align with the projects in question, and references can often shed light on these areas in a way that even candidates cannot.

5

Onboard

While technically occurring after the fractional expert has been hired, onboarding is our way of further gauging fit as the expert’s first project kicks off. It provides us with a chance to watch how our chosen fractional expert interacts with an organization’s staff, also letting us know if there are learning opportunities we can discuss with the expert as they work their way through the project.

The greatest challenge most organizations face is not in deciding whether fractional work is right for their business, it’s knowing whether they’re bringing in the right person or people. Our vetting process and curated experience eliminate that challenge completely, as you know that every expert advisor you are connected to through Canopy has proven themselves to be the best of the best.
