Tell us about your creative process. What are some of the ways you bring a client’s vision to life?

Many people are shocked to hear that I was a biology major in college. But science and design are similar in many ways. It is about creating a hypothesis, testing that hypothesis and finding the answers. My creative process is a lot like a science laboratory, but instead of a composition notebook, I have a sketchbook and Adobe Illustrator. Each brand has a different combination of elements that make it work. I love finding those elements. It’s a puzzle every time.

You have a lot of great big agency experience. Why did you decide to become an independent consultant?

When we had our son 11 years ago, I knew that I could not go back into an agency for a while. The hours are LONG and unpredictable. I started a design blog just to keep my brain in the game. Work poured in through the blog. It just happened naturally. I absolutely love working my own schedule.

What are some of your favorite trends in branding or advertising today?

I am a big fan of companies that give back. We can thank Patagonia, Warby Parker, Toms and many others for creating a trend that has stuck. We need to be the example that we have been waiting for. Showing love to our fellow human beings and our mother earth is a place to start.
Design wise, I am loving refined type mixed with vintage or hand drawn patterns. The juxtaposition always pulls me in!

What is one your favorite Canopy projects?

One of my favorite canopy projects was for The Paper Lady. Rosie, the owner, has such amazing style. It was a fun one to piece together from her love of type, tigers, roses and parties!

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

In my free time, I love to chill out with my family, redecorate our home (it’s never ever finished), run, hike, ski, and read (I just finished The Underground Railroad … incredible!). The Colorado mountains in the summer are my favorite place to be in the world.
